General
A
positive association with animals provides people with the opportunity to
love, share and enjoy companionship and security.
A close association with pets has also been shown to enhance childhood
development in many ways. Mutual respect,
unconditional love and trust are important attributes freely exchanged beteen
people and pets, but can exist only when a clear understanding of the needs
of pets has been acknowledged. To meet the need of your dog we can assist
you in selecting the right and providing advice on:

KennelsThe
primary purpose of a kennel is to provide a comfortable, safe environment
in which the dog sleeps, or in some instances the kennel forms an enclosure
in which to contain the dog for purposes such as breeding, security or confinement
whilst the owner is away.
Regardless
of the purpose of the kennel, a number of design principles apply:
- Must be easily cleaned.
- Provide protection from elements such as rain, wind, sun, heat and the cold
- Must allow the dog to move around within. If it is a kennel used for confinement; it must
be large enough to allow the dog to exercise.)
- Must be well ventilated to allow fresh air to circulate.
Please
ask our staff for assistance in selecting the type of kennel most suited to
your pet.

Food and Water Bowls
Various food receptacles are used to present
food to an animal and it is important to clean these thoroughly each day. These can be made from different materials with
the most common being plastic, stainless steel and ceramic. Whilst lightweight and inexpensive, plastic
bowls are readily chewed and scratched. Ceramic
bowls are quite heavy and sturdy. Stainless steel bowls are easily cleaned and
resist chewing by the dog. Special
bowl types are also available and these are designed for specific situations
and breeds. Please ask our staff for
assistance in choosing a food bowl for you pet.
There
are many new water dishes available that make caring for your dog so much
easier. These include very large dishes that are weighted to prevent tipping
over, and bowls that are permanently attached to a water tap and refill if
levels are below a certain point much like a bird water / feeder or a horse
water trough. The pace and rapidly changing lifestyle of many
people necessitates many pets to be also on the move. Collapsible bowls are available which folds
up into the walker’s pocket however are sturdy enough to retain water for
pet drinks on the run. Please ask our
staff for more information on specialised water bowls.

Identification and Dog Registration
Identification
Identification of pets is essential if the owner is likely to relocate
a lost pet. The most common and inexpensive
method is with a collar and nametag. It is not unusual for pets to become ‘lost’ due to slipping collars and escaping and this identification method is thus
rendered ineffective in these cases. Many
owners across the world are adopting the practice of micro chipping their
pets, as it is a permanent identification method of the pet with a small microchip
the size of a grain of rice being inserted under the skin near the shoulders.
Once scanned, a reader detects the microchip number that is recorded
usually at a central database together with the owners contact details.
This enables regulation authorities such as the RSPCA and government
pounds to check ownership details especially when the pet has no other external
identification.
Local
Government information
Most
local governments have by-laws that pertain to the housing and registration
of animals. This is to encourage responsible
pet ownership in order to provide a safe, healthy environment for both pet
owners and non-pet owners. If an owner does not comply with these by-laws,
the local authority may issue fines. Although
pets are issued with a local government registration tag, this poses the same
concerns as listed above and should not be relied upon as a sole method of
identification.
