A major identifying factor to look at when classifying birds is to look at their dietary requirements.
Granivores
Granivorous birds are grain-eating birds such as Sparrows, Budgerigars, Doves, Pigeons, Parrots and Cockatoos.

Insectivores
Birds which eat insects generally are known as the Insectivores. They have pointed beaks and include birds such as Magpies, Crows, Butcher Birds and Mynahs.

Nectivores
These birds feed on nectar from plants (or commercially prepared) and have thin slender beaks and often a hairy tongue. Nectar feeders include Honeyeaters and Lorikeets.

Raptors Birds of prey (which kill with their feet) have short hooked beaks and include Owls, Eagles, Hawks and Kestrels.
