Model pet-owner braves fire to save cats

An 84-year-old woman braved her own life to re-enter a blazing building to rescue her beloved cats.

Evelyn Covey, who is also blind, dismissed the warnings of rescue workers and ran back into the building to collect her felines, reports the Toronto Star.

The fire started when Ms Covey, who lives with her daughter, left a candle burning and went to bed - the flame caught the curtains and the property went up in smoke and fire.

Rescue workers were unimpressed with the efforts of the woman, and because of her bravery needed to be admitted to hospital.

David Blizzard, a member of the fire crew told the publication: "When you get out of a fire, stay out.

"We know it's hard if you have family members (in there) – or pets, because they are part of your family.

"But as fire-fighters, we will go in, we will search, we will find. We're trained to rescue."

Recently, a clever kitten displayed his survival instincts by using a sofa as a shelter from a blazing building to avoid injury. Rescue workers were surprised to find him wedged into a sofa in the gutted property.

Pampered pooch becomes millionaire

A lucky dog became a millionaire when its wealthy owner died and left a share of her fortune behind for it in a trust fund.

The fortunate white Maltese, called Trouble, hit the jackpot when owner, wealthy hotelier Leona Hemlsley, left him £6 million in her will.

However, that may be no consolation for the disheartened eight-year-old pup, who dearly loved his owner.

Commenting on Ms Helmsley's relationship with Trouble, Zamfira Sfara, former housekeeper to the deceased said: "I never saw a human being so in love with an animal. They were always together everywhere."

In fact, the hotel magnate loved Trouble so much that she cut two of her grandchildren, Megan and Craig Panzirer, out of her will so that the Maltese could receive a large share.

Ms Helmsley's brother, Alvin Rosenthal has been left with the job of looking after Trouble and ensuring that he spends all of his money wisely.

Cat hitches 1,000 mile round trip

A wandering feline made a 1,000 mile trip from her home in Green Bay to Virginia and followed it up with 18 day hike - before returning home again.

Annie, a Calico cat, hopped onto a removal truck belonging to her neighbours and embarked on a three day journey to Roanoke, Virginia.

Moving the boxes out of the van, the family were shocked to find Annie had come with them but before they could scoop her up she ran off into the woods.

Chip Grubb, a member of the moving party, said: "We're carrying boxes and suddenly we see something jump from one box to another,'

"All things considered, she looked pretty good. But she had been in there for three days without food or water.'

Nearly three weeks later Annie was found and arrangements were made for her to be flown back to her owner Ann Roskam.

Pleased to be re-united with her pet, Ms Roskam said: "She likes to be outdoors all the time but she comes home every morning. When she didn't come home, we thought we'd lost her. We did go searching for her."

"She's definitely a pretty darn independent cat."
