Pet Airways — the animal-only airline

Now you really can say that the airline industry has gone to the dogs ... and cats ...

A new airline has launched in the States called Pet Airways. Their gimmick? Pet Airways is the only airline that flies Fido and Fluffy exclusively, and in the main cabin.

These days many people give their furry friends the reverence and respect formerly reserved for dear old Gran, so it isn't surprising many travellers didn't feel kosher shipping their Corgis as cargo.

Enter Pet Airways. For $149USD ($210AUD ... for now) they will fly your dog or cat all the way from New York to Los Angeles in the main cabin of an aircraft (or between other hubs like Denver, Washington DC and Chicago).

Your pooch will be greeted at an exclusive Pawssengers Lounge (gag), given a pre-flight potty break, and walked on board. In-flight, your pet will be checked on by a Fido-friendly-flightie every fifteen minutes. You can follow your pup's progress using their online tracking system. And a post-flight potty break will see your pet off the plane and into arrivals, where you can collect a refreshed and happy furball.

Kremlin gives in to schoolgirl's demands for a guinea pig

Russian schoolgirl who wrote to Dmitri Medvedev, the country's president, asking for a girlfriend for her male pet guinea pig has dutifully received one.

Thirteen-year-old Anastasia, who used the president's official Kremlin website to lodge the request, initially received no response and was even chastised by her headmistress for wasting the leader's time.

Russian media picked up on the story and Anastasia's parents wrote to Medvedev again to complain about the headmistress' actions, this time receiving a prompt response.

Anastasia was presented with two guinea pigs by an embarrassed local education director, along with a personal note from the president.

Local youth committee chairman Sergei Chyuev said: "This shows a complete failure by the authorities to understand real people and their problems."

Another Russian girl recently received a dress and a trip to Moscow after a request during a question and answer session on live television with the prime minister, Vladimir Putin.

Heroic dog awarded highest honour for pet bravery

A New Zealand dog that lost its life while helping to save a group of young children from a Pit Bull Terrier attack has been posthumously honoured with the highest award available for pet bravery.

The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) Gold Medal was awarded to the Jack Russell for fighting off an attack on five children aged between three and twelve.

George later died from sustained injuries from the attack and his accolade was picked up by his owner Alan Gay.

Jan McLoughlin, director general of the PDSA, said: "George was a small dog with a lion's share of courage," adding that the charity was "proud to honour" the brave pet.

Mr Gay told New Zealand's One News: "He was a brilliant little dog, intelligent. You couldn't insult him."

The award is considered to be the animal equivalent of the George Cross and George is the first canine in New Zealand to receive it.
