Dog faces the courts

A dog in India has appeared in court for being a persistent trouble maker, it has been reported.

Police in the eastern state of Bihar demanded the animal was tried after it bit several people, although its owner claimed it only menaces burglars, according to the BBC.

Rajiv Ranjan, district official, commented: "The court was compelled to issue a summons to the dog since the police found that it was a threat to peace and feared that it might create a law and order problem."

The dog, which is called Chhotu, appeared in court last Thursday (July 24th), where it managed to not bite or bark at anyone, the news provider reports.

Rajkumari Devi, Chhotu's owner, is the victim of a plot by neighbours attempting to take her property, the defence lawyer told the court.

Chhotu and his owner have been ordered to return to the court on August 5th.

The case is not the first time the pet has fallen foul of the law - Chhotu was sentenced to death in 2003 following similar allegations, but was saved after animal rights activists complained, according to the news provider.

Comet the goldfish set for dizzy heights

Comet the goldfish has proven to be a shooting star among the watery world after learning how to play football, according to reports.

The four-inch fella has also learnt how to slam dunk and limbo dance as he struts his swimming stuff in his bowl.

Owner Dr Dean Pomerleau, 41, trained the two-year-old golden star using a training technique called positive reinforcement.

He said: "With the correct tools and the basic promise of a food reward, fish can very quickly learn complex tricks - like the limbo, zigzag or playing fetch.

"Now people in the market for a dog might want to consider a fish instead."

Dr Pomerleau's three-year-old fantail, Albert Einstein, currently holds the world record for a fish with the largest repertoire of tricks but Comet has already learnt these and is set to steal his crown.

The training technique uses a method of rewarding successful completion of tasks and is what is used to train dolphins and other marine mammals.

Army to send in the dogs

The British Army is set to send a crack team of commando canines into some of its war zones, it has been reported.

A group of German shepherds are currently being trained in preparation to jump out of military airplanes from heights of up to 25,000 feet, according to the BBC.

It is not known if the pooches will be covered by pet insurance though it is likely such arrangements will have been made as they will be fitted with oxygen masks and sent to countries like Afghanistan.

The news provider's defence correspondent, Paul Adams, said dogs have been used in combat zones since as early as World War Two but this new breed of dog is something very different.

According to the report, the Ministry of Defence refused to confirm what the dogs will be used for, though it is suggested they could be used to sniff out explosives.
